How to use Steno
A short setup guide after download.
1. Launch and install the app
Open the downloaded file and complete the installation.
App launch if macOS blocks it
Since the app is not signed yet, it may not launch on first run.
Open the steno.dmg file and drag the app to the Applications folder. Go to Applications and launch the app.
If macOS shows a warning, use one of these options:
- Right-click (or Control-click) Steno.app and choose Open.
- Or run in Terminal:
xattr -cr /Applications/Steno.app
2. Grant required permissions
When prompted, allow microphone, system audio, and accessibility permissions.
Beta note: if the app freezes at this stage, close it and launch it again.
3. Generate API KEY (video instruction)
After permissions are granted, generate API KEY as shown in the video below.
For this, visit https://aistudio.google.com/
4. Use API KEY and start using the app
Once API KEY is generated and added in the app, you can start using Steno immediately.
Important: each API KEY currently allows up to 20 requests per day.
No need to worry: these 20 requests per day are free (free tier). If the limit is exceeded, no money is charged, and the request is simply declined.
